Water is life, no doubt, but one thing you should ask yourself is, why ascribe such great importance to water? Going back to basic and elementary science days, most texts in a bid to define what this essential commodity is, would say: Water is an inorganic, transparent substance that has no colour, no taste, and no odour. It goes further that water is the main constituent of the Earth’s hydrosphere and the fluids that most living organisms depend on.

Water gives no Calories, yet it gives life

Water, though provides no calories nor organic nutrients, it is, however, vital for all known forms of life. Water has H2O as its chemical formula, which implies that each of its molecules contains one oxygen and two hydrogen atoms connected by covalent bonds.

It is also important to note that 71% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water, mostly in the seas and oceans, and with small portions of it as groundwater.

One can, therefore, agree that Water is indeed life! Plants need water to grow and reproduce and human beings are not exempted. We need water to live adequately and perfectly. Humans drink water, bathe, wash dishes and other items with water. There is a common saying that “humans can survive days without food but not without water.” That’s the truth, water is so vital and essential for the survival of humans. To further tell you how important water is, the United Nations Goals on sustainable development are not complete without including water. Apart from the fact that water and sanitation make up the SDGs sixth goal, water is crucial to optimally achieve sustainable development goals.
