It’s Been A Year!
At the Renewable Energy and Environmental Sustainability for Africa initiative-REES AFRICA, the year 2020 has been highly purposeful.
This year, as an organization and a community of Sustainability inclined millenials, we carried out activities in line with the organization’s vision and mission.
First-quarter of the year 2020, REES AFRICA had her biggest project for the year. We granted off grid energy access to the Kagarko community of Kaduna state, Nigeria. This project had us traveling through several states. With effective collaboration with partner organizations like Eleven Eleven Twelve foundation EETF, Do Good Africa, and The Nigerian Tribune, we completed the project within four days.
REES millenials worked day and night connecting wires, fixing bulbs, and setting up solar energy grids. The supply was for three communities who would later enjoy security, access to education, and other clean energy benefits.
By March 2020, the whole world was in fear as the global COVID 19 pandemic crept into our international waters. Globally, volunteering began to take a different dimension. Initially, we carried out all activities via media like Zoom for video conferencing, training, and events. We needed to continue our advocacy for sustainable development as the world kept moving, even though it appeared to be at a standstill.
As the months went by, the world did cry, and we mourned deep down; by the seventh month of the year 2020, REES AFRICA set out to provide relief kits for the Shasha community in Lagos state. We used the rare opportunity to create awareness of environmental cleanliness, sanitation, and sustainability. United Nations funded this particular project, which was carried out by a few representatives of the organization.
Towards the last quarter of the year, countries began easing out lockdown plans across the board. Thus, volunteering began to return to normal. REES AFRICA as a body took part at the World Climate strike match and subsequently the world cleanup activities worldwide.
In 2020, REES AFRICA clocked three, with a community of vibrant youths with the continual zeal and character for impacting lives and championing the environment’s sustainability without compromise or prejudice. Though the year came with many challenges, our youths at REES AFRICA endeavored to impact the nation.
Our teams at Abuja, Ogun, Lagos, Oyo, Kaduna, and Accra were all amazing.
We now look forward to more volunteerism and collaborations in the year 2021.
