Access to energy is at the heart of development and the path to eradicating extreme poverty without access to energy (electricity ) is narrow and long. Studies have shown that in fulfilling the SDGs, the seventh goal of the SDG is very crucial as it helps deliver 65 per cent of the total targets. It is true that over 60 per cent of Nigerians population are not connected to the grid and 95 per cent of this population live in rural/marginalized areas.
One of our initiatives is to light up rural communities without access to the grid and we do this via inclusive service delivery. However, we are aware that many especially in the urban areas and among youths are not conversant with the happenings- It cannot be happening in the 21st century they say. An important adverse effect energy poverty birth is CLIMATE CHANGE and its interconnected effects with the economy, social and other environmental issues.
To create maximum awareness and prompt action, REES Africa would be discussing the importance of energy access with clips of our engagement from one of our activated areas- Sagbokodji Island in Lagos. The screening of the documentary series — ATUPA showcases the reality of a marginalized island in Lagos, highlighting how energy poverty disrupts livelihood and lifestyle and as well, influences extreme poverty. ATUPA addresses the SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS particularly SDG 7 and SDG 13 as well as share insights on how energy access influences other SDGs and help achieve sustainable communities (SDG 11).
